Packed full of features to capture the night, the R series continues to push the boundaries of smartphone photography, design and innovation.

OPPO’s R series is known for testing the limit with smartphone camera technology and cutting-edge features, all at an affordable price. The new devices in the R-Series have taken the features that Aussies have come to love and improved them to meet their evolving lifestyle needs:

Improved camera technology, enhanced with AI and a new Sony sensor allows for new flagship features like Ultra Night Mode and TOF 3D Photography in the R17 Pro

World’s fastest charging technology – SuperVOOC Flash Charge – will charge the R17 Pro to 40% in just 10 minutes.

A 6.4-inch FHD+ Waterdrop inspired Screen and the first to come with Corning Gorilla Glass 6

Seize the night with state of the art camera technology

Both the R17 & R17 Pro come with an improved 25MP front-facing camera, with enhanced AI selfie beautification technology. On the back, the R17 has a 16MP + 5MP dual rear camera combination. While the R17 Pro has been designed to be the ultimate night shooter, adopting a 12MP+20MP+TOF (Time of Flight) three lens combination camera equipped with F2.4/F1.5 smart aperture, optical image stabilisation and a new AI Ultra-Clear Engine.

These features all combine to create a new ultra-clear night mode, helping customers capture clear, high-quality images in low light settings. When users turn on the camera, the AI engine will determine the current scene and intelligently match the best shooting solution. The ultra-clear engine will then intelligently obtain a clearer picture through algorithms, such as long exposure anti-shake, highlight suppression, dark part details increase, area adjustment and noise removal. Finally, pixel colour reconstruction technology will optimise the colour performance, giving a greater sense of transparency and depth.

http://bridgestreetjournal.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/OPPO-R17-Pro-Lifestyle-Video.mp4

OPPO is also the first smartphone brand to use both structured light and TOF technologies in their cameras, making the R17 Pro ready to take advantage of the new AR and VR applications that will come to market thanks to the new technology. The new TOF-Ready 3D camera processes nanosecond bursts of infrared light to better interpret depth for use across a range of applications.

“OPPO is known for delivering camera technology that continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in a smartphone. The R17 & R17 Pro are full of cutting-edge features that showcase what OPPO is capable of, said Michael Tran, managing director at OPPO Australia.

“In particular, we are excited to bring the R17 Pro’s Ultra Night Mode and TOF 3D camera capabilities to Australia. Utilising the latest in smartphone camera technology, OPPO will help its customers seize the night and take advantage of new and exciting camera applications as they come to market. OPPO is excited to be at the forefront of this technology in Australia,”, said Michael Tran, Managing Director at OPPO Australia.

Live life in the fast lane with supercharged performance

OPPO is also bringing SuperVOOC Flash Charging, the world’s fastest charging technology to the R17 Pro. First introduced to OPPO’s Find X Device, the R17 Pro comes packed with a 2*1850mAh bi-cell design for up to 50-watt charging power that improves battery performance. Users will be ready to go in a flash with the R17 Pro capable of reaching 40% charge in just 10 minutes.

To keep things moving fast the R17 & R17 Pro comes with 6GB RAM and 128GB of storage. The R17 Pro unleashes full-speed computing performance and lightening-fast app launch times with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chipset, while the R17 sports the Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 chipset.

To support its supercharged hardware, the R17 & R17 Pro come with OPPO’s latest operating system – ColorOS 5.2, based on Android 8.1.

A tough act to beat

The R17 Series is the first mobile phone to use Corning® Gorilla® Glass 6, one of the world’s toughest smartphone screen technologies. The R17 & R17 Pro will be able to tolerate one-meter drops onto rough surfaces up to 15 times, which is double the strength of Gorilla Glass 5 found on other devices.

Additionally, both the R17 & R17 Pro can be unlocked instantly just by touching the screen. There is a hidden, ultra-photosensitive sensor built into the Gorilla display to ensure the clearest fingerprint images possible.

All of these features are packed into a 6.4 inch water drop screen, with an aspect ratio of 91.5%, and are encased in a beautifully designed tri-colour gradient design, giving the R17 Pro & R17 a premium look and feel of the phone.

“We can’t wait to bring the R17 & R17 Pro to Australia. We believe with these new smartphones we will open up a whole new premium mid-range segment, offering high-quality cameras and supercharged performance. It’s important that we keep offering customers flagship features at affordable prices which meet the lifestyle needs of our customers,” said Tran.

The OPPO R17 devices are available to purchase from November 12th from selected retailers and carriers. For more information, visit www.oppo.com.

Ah now it becomes clear. We’re getting a scene from Last of Us 2, set in a church tent similar to the location of the press conference. We see an older Ellie slow dancing with another female character – and they kiss. It’s very sweet.

But then the scene shifts to a swampy woodland, with Ellie creeping through the darkness. She witnesses the brutal scene of a man being hung and stabbed – it looks like a scene we saw in the earlier trailer, but now from Ellie’s perspective. From here, Ellie has to navigate through a broken down multistorey car park before running into the long grass of an abandoned lot to avoid gunfire. It’s tense graphically violent stuff.

Ubisoft E3 2018 conference summary: Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Starfox joins Starlink and an end game for The Division 2

It was another idiosyncratic and high energy conference from Ubisoft at E3 this year, the publisher throwing everything into its presentation from dancing pandas to an onstage motorcycle accident. But with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey already revealed a little early, there was very little in the way of fresh announcements.

Instead, Ubi told us more about the latest Assassin’s Creed epic, which will be set during the Peloponnesian War and features two playable characters, both with customisable gear and weapons, and a deeper RPG system, including dialogue trees which will affect the story direction, and romance. It’s launching on 5 October.

Veteran Nintendo fans were thrilled to discover that Starfox will make a guest appearance in the Switch version of open-universe space combat game Starlink: Battle for Atlas. We also found out that Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 is paying lots of attention to the end game, with the addition of eight-player raids. At the end of the campaign, you also pick a fresh progression path for your character, adding new specialisations, tools and abilities. There will also be three big pieces of free DLC this year and more are promised.

There was a new cinematic trailer for Beyond Good and Evil 2 which will be a prequel to the original title and features a younger version of its lead character, Jade. Ubisoft is also working with Joseph Gordon Levitt’s company Hitrecord to offer budding artists and musicians the chance to contribute to the game while its being developed. There was also a thrilling gameplay demo of Skull & Bones, the seafaring adventure, based around a deep naval battle simulation, including co-operative tactics between different players.

The only announcement was Trials Rising, a new outing for the motorcycle stunt series, coming next year. It boasts a strange new co-op mode called Tandem Bike in which two players work together to control a single vehicle. It’s also heading to the Nintendo Switch for the first time.

So this was an event all about showing much more of the games we knew were coming rather than giving us anything new or shocking. Unless you count the dancing panda at the start.

We’re moving on to Tom Clancy’s The Division 2. There’s a long cinematic trailer of a devastated city with citizens cowering in fear, hiding from armed gangs, and dead animals floating in flooded streets. We see a woman being executed, and then it’s pretty much over.

Your actions will apparently have clear impacts on the lives of civilians as you attempt to pacify Washington DC. At the end of the campaign, you pick a new progression path for your character, adding new specialisations, tools and abilities. This is clearly answering some of the complaints about The Division’s lack of a clear end game.

The big news: raids are coming to Division 2! “We’re launching with plans for years of frequent content updates,” says the creative director. This year will see three DLC deliveries with new activities and missions, and they’re all free.

The Division 2 – a game about trying to keep order after a pandemic has destroyed the US – seems to be really leaning into the human angle this time, at least in the trailers. Lots of evocative shots of kids at play in the trailers. Lots of people in difficulty, trying to comfort each other through the disaster. Some very uncomfortable footage of people getting shot or kids desperate for help. The first Division, set in frosty Manhattan, felt oddly impersonal most of the time, so this is definitely a change.

A fitting place for the launch of a phone which redefines the art of the smartphone.

The Find series is known for pushing the boundaries of what smartphones are capable of and pioneering new designs. The much anticipated Find X looks to continue this trend. With the launch being held at the Louvre Museum, it is expected to not only bring new smartphone technology to the fore but also be at the forefront of smartphone aesthetics.

“We are really looking forward to bringing the latest device in the Find series to Australia. The Find X will go beyond the normal features offered on the market and deliver a whole new experience to customers, incorporating OPPO innovations and design concepts into the device,” said Michael Tran, Executive Director at OPPO.

“As always, OPPO will ensure the device offers customers amazing value, in addition to the flagship features. Our previous Find devices have been well received by savvy Aussies looking for the latest in smartphone technology and we expect the Find X will take the series to the next level.”

The Find series has always been at the forefront of smartphone innovation since the first device, the Find X903, was released in June 2011. From the first unique side-sliding qwerty keyboard design, to the thinnest body to the highest-definition screen and fastest charging technology, the OPPO Find series has ignited the public’s imagination time and time again.

A look back at OPPO’s Find Series over the years

OPPO Finder, 6.65mm
In 2012, the smartphone market was inundated with thick, heavy products. OPPO took the lead and released the ultra-thin flagship Finder. With a body of 6.65 mm, this product was the thinnest in the world at the time. Meanwhile, the OPPO Finder creatively applied a double-layer saber-class stainless steel frame for a sturdy body.

• The thinnest body around the world, only 6.65 mm thick
• Stainless steel frame structure comparable to a Swiss army knife
• Super AMLOED Plus screen of 4.3 inches

OPPO Find 5, 1080P, a New Era of HD Display
After renewing the public’s understanding of smartphone design, OPPO again focused on the innovation of screen technology. While mainstream flagships were using standard 720P display screens, OPPO released the revolutionary flagship Find 5. With a beautiful 1080P resolution screen and design concept of ‘Screen-off Aesthetics’, Find 5 proved to be a revolutionary viewing experience. Furthermore, with the stunning design and strong performance, Find 5 won many awards such as the “best buy recommendations” of PC magazine and “IF Product Design Award”.

• China’s first 1080P screen
• Design concept of ‘Screen-off Aesthetics’
• 13MP HD camera

OPPO Find 7, 5 Minutes Charging for 2 Hours of Phone Calls
With the increasingly powerful performance of mobile phones, the industry faced the issue of high power consumption and slow charging. However, OPPO tapped into the latest technology to lead the industry once again. In 2014, the company released the Find 7, bringing forth the fastest charging technology – VOOC flash charging.

Compared with the commonly applied charging solutions, VOOC flash charging technology significantly reduced charging times and achieved the goal of “charging for 5 minutes, talking for 2 hours”. To date, VOOC flash charging technology has served more than 100 million users worldwide, with the number still rising.

• VOOC flash charging
• The world’s first 2K mobile phone screen
• Skyline Notification – an aesthetically pleasing blue oscillating LED notification light

Microsoft is buying the code-sharing site GitHub, a developer-focused startup that has become a crucial part of the programming industry, for $7.5bn

The acquisition shows Microsoft further cementing its role as a company built around tools for developers, part of a pivot away from its flagship Windows operating system started by its chief executive, Satya Nadella, four years ago.

Related: How the Guardian uses GitHub to audit GitHub

“That is why we are so excited about today’s announcement,” Nadella wrote in a blogpost announcing the acquisition. “More than 28 million developers already collaborate on GitHub, and it is home to more than 85 million code repositories used by people in nearly every country. From the largest corporations to the smallest startups, GitHub is the destination for developers to learn, share and work together to create software. It’s a destination for Microsoft too. We are the most active organisation on GitHub, with more than 2 million ‘commits,’ or updates, made to projects.”

The vast majority of GitHub’s users access the site for free, with the trade-off being that the code they share must remain public. Users can pay for private accounts, while larger companies can pay more for the ability to host GitHub’s platform on their own private servers. The paid-for features reportedly bring in around $200m in annual revenue.

Following the acquisition, GitHub will continue to operate independently and will remain an open platform, Microsoft said. The company committed to continuing to allow to use the programming languages, tools and operating systems of their choice for their projects, and to be able to deploy their code to any operating system, any cloud and any device.

“The enterprise offering will fold nicely into Microsoft’s other businesses,” the analyst Ben Thompson of Stratechery wrote “but … the real win for Microsoft is not incremental peanuts in enterprise revenue but winning hearts and minds with developers broadly.

“In other words, not only should sceptics not be worried about Microsoft unduly favouring their own platforms, they should also be excited that, more than any other potential acquirer, Microsoft is likely to push the individual and community aspects that make GitHub so unique.”

GitHub’s ubiquity has led to some unconventional uses. GreatFire, the activist campaign that works to disseminate information blocked by Chinese web censors, uses GitHub as a distribution platform, ensuring that China cannot block the material without also severely harming its domestic technology industry. The government tried, in 2013, but lifted the ban five days later after an outcry from Chinese coders.

Sign up to the daily Business Today email or follow Guardian Business on Twitter at @BusinessDesk

In recent years, GitHub’s popularity as a platform has disguised problems within the business. It has been without a chief executive for almost a year and its revenues have been outpaced by its expenditure, with net losses in the tens of millions. As part of the deal, Nat Friedman, former chief executive of Xamarin, a software firm acquired by Microsoft in 2016, will take over as chief executive.

Microsoft, for its part, has slowly been repositioning itself from being focused on the Windows operating system to a broader suite of developer-focused services, including its Azure cloud platform – the largest competitor to Amazon Web Services – and the Cortana AI suite.

In March, the chief executive, Nadella, finished the reorganisation, axing the Windows division entirely and splitting its responsibilities between a consumer-focused group, led by a former Microsoft Office head, and a developer-focused one, led by the company’s cloud and enterprise chief.

Bose QC35 II, £330

Bose is one of the pioneers of noise-cancelling technology and is often lauded as the best in the business. The QC35 II are the second edition of the company’s wireless noise-cancelling cans and set the standard by which everyone else is measured.

They’re excellent not only for active noise cancelling (ANC) but passive (noise blocked by the design of the headphones, rather than by playing ambient sounds) too, which is where some rivals fall short. Bluetooth connectivity is good, but only supports AAC and not other HD audio formats, a cable is there if you need it and the battery lasts around 20 hours with everything turned on.

They have a distinct, tightly controlled “Bose” sound, which most but not all will like. The Bose app allows you to turn down or off the ANC, while volume and playback controls are on the right ear cup. An action button on the left invokes Google Assistant or toggles noise cancelling.

They’re light and comfortable, relatively small and understated on the head, fold up for travel and are durable enough to survive day-to-day commuting.

Verdict: They’re not quite as feature‑rich as some, but they’re more comfortable and have the best noise cancelling.

Sennheiser PXC 550, £350

Sennheiser’s PXC 550 are a bit dull to look at. They’re also not as comfy as some. But being light and relatively airy when worn, they’re more likely to better accommodate those of us with large ears.

The PXC 550 have Sennheiser’s characteristic wide soundscape, which sounds less direct than rivals. They lack a little energy with electronica, and bass heads should look elsewhere, but fed guitar and vocals they sound fab.

Sennheiser’s app lets you adjust the level of noise cancelling, change the EQ and turn on smart pause, which stops the music when you take them off. Unfortunately, to get smart pause to work reliably you have to wait for two seconds once you turn the headphones on before putting them on. Given you turn them on and off by twisting the earcups into place that quickly gets annoying. The right ear cup has a touch-sensitive pad – tap to pause, swipe right and left to skip, or up and down to adjust volume. A switch turns noise-cancelling off, to dynamic adjustment based on noise level or to maximum, while a button cycles through sound effects such as “club”, “movie” and “speech”.

Noise-cancelling is good, but not quite on a par with Bose and Sony, particularly on the daily commute where they struggle to block out noise of fellow passengers and screeching trains.

The PXC 550 support aptX for Bluetooth and come with a cable. The battery lasts around 30 hours between charges and the headphones fold up for travel.

Verdict: A long-lasting option with a wide soundscape.

Bowers & Wilkins PX, £329

The headphones you wear can be a statement. If you’re wearing B&W PX you’re stating that you like your headphones to look as good as they sound, with much finer, metal-articulated arms, platinum highlights and fabric-covered earcups and headband.

The PX aren’t ostentatious, but they look more like a £300-plus set of headphones from yesteryear than the bright plastic of the Beats generation.

I found that to get the best out of them you have to crank them up loud, which sort of defeats the point of having noise-cancelling. They’re also more affected by the noise-cancelling, which noticeably changes the sound for the worse when turned on.

Noise cancelling is good with droning engines, but not quite as good as the rest in an office or on the commute. They handle the wind the best of them all, however.

The B&W app allows you to customise the noise cancelling between “office”, “city” and “flight”, including the level of ambient noise let through. Buttons on the right ear cup control playback and volume. Taking them off pauses the music, while they’ll accept music over Bluetooth with aptX HD support, analogue cable or USB-C.

They feel heavier and are less comfortable than rivals, with thinner, harder pads that squeeze the sides of your head more firmly. They don’t fold down for travel either.

Verdict: They look great and will sound great if you like your music really loud.

Sony WH-1000XM2, £330

Sony’s top-of-the-line noise-cancelling headphones may not have a snappy name, but they pack a real punch. They are arguably the best Bose rivals money can buy, matching the standard-bearer in noise-cancelling. What Sony adds is slightly better sound, including HD and hi-res audio support over Bluetooth, and a number of customisation options such as noise-cancelling that can be adjusted either manually or automatically.

The smartphone app also allows you to change the perceived direction of audio: to make it sound like the music is coming from in front of you or behind, or all around. There’s a full equaliser too.

The right earcup is touch-sensitive – double tap to pause or play, swipe up or down to adjust volume or left or right to skip track. Cover the touch-sensitive area with a hand and it pipes ambient sound into the headphones so you can hear announcements or similar. A switch on the left ear cup can also turn ambient sound on or off.

The battery lasts around 30 hours and they fold up for travel and are very comfortable for extended listening periods. The downside is that they’re a bit bigger than the Bose QC35, aren’t great at handling two devices connected at the same time, and aren’t quite as good at dealing with wind noise.

Verdict: Ideal if you want more features or don’t like the way Bose sounds.

Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2, £230

While not exactly cheap, Plantronics’s BackBeat Pro 2 offer wireless noise-cancelling for £100 less than the best of the rest and for the most part you wouldn’t be able to tell.

They have a decent set of controls on the outside. Pause, track skip, noise-cancelling switch and volume jog dial are all on the left cup, while the right has a button to fire up the virtual assistant, a power switch and a microphone mute button. Take them off to pause the music, put them back on to start it again.

Noise-cancelling is good, but not quite best-in-class, letting in a bit more office chatter than the Bose or Sony. Battery life is an excellent 24 hours or so, but they take around three hours to charge when flat.

The Plantronics are very comfortable to wear, even for extended periods, with big, plush ear cups and a nice padded headband, but they do not fold up, only rotating the ear cups to flat.

If you like bass with your noise-cancelling, these are the ones for you: they have the deepest bass available here. It’s tightly controlled and doesn’t ruin the rest of the music, sounding great with thumping bass lines.

Verdict: Excellent deep bass and good noise cancelling for less.

Beats Studio 3 Wireless, £300

The third-generation Beats Studio 3 Wireless are a step up over previous versions of Dr Dre’s noise-cancelling headphones. They’re available in a range of colours and have cups big enough to accommodate most ears.

They’re quite tight on the head, with no rotation in the cups, which means they don’t come close to the Bose or Sony for all-day listening comfort. They do fold up, but not flat like most others, and can be a bit creaky each time they’re opened.

Controls on the outside are fairly simple. There’s a big Beats button for controlling playback, hidden buttons above and below that for volume control, and a power button. Press the power button twice to turn off the noise-cancelling, hold the Beats logo to fire up Siri or Google Assistant on an Android phone.

They work well with Android smartphones and Windows machines, but better with Apple’s products thanks to the company’s W1 chip. Simply turn them on near an iPhone and the pairing is shared between any other Apple devices you might own. They support AAC audio over Bluetooth, with a strong connection in all scenarios.

The active noise-cancelling is good, but not on a par with the Bose and Sony, letting in more commuting noise. The headphones have a particular “Beats” sound, which is energetic and heavy on mid-bass, suiting pop but less so ambient electronica.

Verdict: Great if you have an iPhone, but better comfort, sound and noise- cancelling are available elsewhere.

How they work…

Microphones on the headphones detect ambient noise heading to your ear. The system then plays the inverse of those unwanted sound waves through the headphones. The sound waves meet and cancel one another out before hitting your eardrum. This is normally described as active noise-cancelling (ANC); noise blocked by the design of the headphones is described as passive noise-cancelling.

Police in Japan have come up with a solution. They are planning to use 3D cameras to take mug shots, making it easier to identify people from security camera footage.
According to the Asahi Shimbun news site, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police will be able to adjust the size and angle of the 3D mug shots. They can then compare shots with images taken from security cameras.
“As we can identify the suspects more quickly and accurately, our arrest rate is expected to become greater,” a high-ranking investigation officer of the MPD told the new site.
All 102 of the city’s police stations will be fitted with the 3D imaging tech from April this year.
It will allow cops to take 3D mug shots as well as well conventional pictures for their investigations.
Using the technology, pictures will be shot from three different directions. The image will then be illuminated with striped lighting to create a 3D effect.

The former head of the National Security Agency has called for Silicon Valley to work with the US Government to develop encryption policies and strategies before the next terrorist attack.

‘Right now, we have an opportunity to do this in an unemotional manner,” Keith Alexander, the NSA’s former director, told Bloomberg TV.

”We should take that opportunity and solve these problems to the best of our ability. It won’t be perfect. But get reasonable people to the table.”

”If we can come up with a solution that we — the United States – can put forward as a balanced solution, perhaps that’s a solution that we could help Apple, Facebook, and Google in Europe, Asia and other places.”

Alexander, a retired four-star Army general who is now chief executive officer of IronNet Cybersecurity, said technological change had outpaced encryption and this needed to be tackled.

The most striking example was the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s attempt to force Apple to help unlock the iPhone of a gunman in December’s San Bernardino, California.

Apple had claimed it was an unreasonable request and the matter had to be determined by Congress.

In the end, the US Justice Department withdrew its request after the FBI said it found another way to access the phone.

Twitter, battling to stop the departure of its top line people and do something about its slow user growth and unimpressive stock market performance, has recruited some big names for its board.

The new board members are Pepsi vice chairman and CFO Hugh Johnston, and Martha Lane Fox, the British internet entrepreneur who founded Lastminute.com

Twitter’s CEO and tweeter-in-chief Jack Dorsey, tweeted that other appointments would follow.

He said these appointments are “ones that will bring diversity and represent the strong communities on Twitter. This matters & is a must.”

These might be seen as curious appointments given that Johnston had never tweeted until the morning the news was announced when he sent out his first tweet: “Looking forward to partnering with @jack @omidkordestani and the @twitter Board to strengthen its power and impact.”

Still, they are important appointments for a company struggling to compete with outfits like Facebook,

“Turnover on the board was necessary — any development here is incrementally good news,” James Cakmak, an analyst at Monness Crespi Hardt told Bloomberg.

“You are bringing in the CFO of one of the biggest brand marketers in the world — there are definitely synergistic opportunities there. For Martha Fox, the international commerce experience certainly could help them think about ways they can increase conversion and possibly expand into new partnerships.”

I don’t know about anyone else but I lose my mind trying to use the online ordering method. What is meant to be a quick and easy way to order turns into half an hour going back and forth refreshing pages, it didn’t add that or this, whats going on now, finding a store near me, I thought you already new that one, where has my pizza gone now? Whats the number I’m calling them.

Domino’s has launched the ultimate app for lazy people and for people with OCD who never change their order, who am I kidding, mega meatlovers please.

To order a pizza you simply launch the app on your phone. No clicks required.

All the customer needs to do is download the app, and connect it to their Domino’s profile. Then they set an “Easy Order” option.

.Domino’s gives you 10 seconds before the order gets placed just in case you have opened the app accidentally.

It’s all part of a process that Domino’s has been going down for a few years. Domino’s is actually a tech company that sells pizzas.

The new app is the latest in a series of innovations that has allowed people to order pizzas using Amazon Echo, Apple’s Siri, emoji on Twitter and Samsung Smart TVs.
