First Mac Ransomware

Up until now, we have only seen ransomware on smart phones and Windows PCs.

Now it’s been found on Mac computers

Palo Alto Networks says it has discovered the first known instance of OS-0 X-oriented ransomware.

The KeRanger is a version of the BitTorrent client Transmission peer to peer information sharing tool.

Transmission is one of the most popular Mac applications used to download software, videos, music and other data.

It takes three days to encrypt files and then demands users pay a digital currency as ransom to regain control.

Palo Alto says it plans to release a blog advising Mac users on ways to check to see if they were infected with the virus and steps they can take to protect against it harming their data
